How to use basic track plans when you decide to make your own design

At some point, most model railroaders will want to make their own track plans. That time often comes when they decide to build a larger layout and decide to emphasize their own favorite operating characteristics. To some, this may mean running more passenger trains-to others, it may reflect an interest in major coal train operations. Whether the modeler chooses to design from scratch, choose one from a large selection of publications, or modify a published design will be a decision made by the individual.

Whatever method is chosen, there are some basic schemes for the mainline arrangement of tracks. Some of these are shown below. This is by no means a complete, or even best, collection of configurations. We are all governed by the size and shape of the space we will build our layouts in and I am sometimes amazed at the ingenuity of model railroaders in their ability to adapt their designs to these restrictions.
